Safe schools initiatives in the Western Cape education department has been allocated R112,518 over the 2019 mid-term expenditure framework budget to stymie a flare-up of gang violence in schools throughout the province.

In 2017, according to the safe schools directorate, there were 177 instances where drugs were found on pupils. In 2018, the number of incidents had increased to 194.
