The role of special schools is again in the spotlight, with the disability royal commission recommending segregated education be phased out.

The remaining commissioners did not think a total phase-out was needed to achieve inclusive education.

"I had one parent in a private session tell me that she tried between four and five different primary schools before she was forced to send her child to a special school." The federal government has announced a taskforce working in consultation with the disability community to respond to the royal commission's recommendations.Over its four-and-a-half-year run, the royal commission heard special schools could start a lifetime of segregation.
