The coach, carrying 54 people, hit a car and overturned on the M53 motorway shortly after 8am while taking pupils to two grammar schools in West Kirby.
Two of the children were taken to hospital with serious injuries, and eight others with minor injuries. Dozens more were assessed at an emergency services training centre in Wallasey. Police have also revealed that pupils on other school coaches following behind witnessed the crash. Chief Superintendent Graeme Robson said they will be provided with specialist trauma support.
Firefighters helped the children exit the bus after it overturned. Sherin Akhtar, a local Labour councillor, said she drove past the crash minutes after it happened. Ms Akhtar, who was in the car with her 13-year-old daughter, said: “We recognised the coach and we knew which students were in there, and we know that there were students that my son knows because he goes to the same grammar school.
