The driver operated a personal conveyance and was paid by the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education for the transportation. "They took the job away from someone who lived here and now our children don't have ," said Melissa Hines, who has one child affected by this. "We appreciate the frustration of families who are affected by this situation," said Calder. "Although schools are doing their best to support these children, we know how important it is for them to be present in school and able to interact with their peers and their teachers. We also understand how important a reliable school transportation service is for families who live in remote areas.
"There's a whole variety of reasons why it makes it so difficult. The cost of gas is one and some of the families here don't have access to a vehicle at all. Then you have to try and get family to drive and that doesn't always work out."
