Mom Noel LaPalomento tells 'Good Morning America' why she lets her daughter take a monthly break from school.

"I know she's good in school and she gets good grades, and she does all her work so she could stay home for a day. It's not gonna hurt her," LaPalomento said.

Kimberly Alexander, a clinical psychologist at the Child Mind Institute in New York City, told "Good Morning America" that children, just like adults, can benefit from the occasional break from school. "You want to really start with a conversation about why. What might be some of the things happening in their school day … and [do] they need a day off to recuperate and prioritize their self-care?" Alexander said.

Alexander said in many cases, a break for children who are otherwise learning to adapt and cope with difficulties overall, can make sense. If a child has a valid reason for taking a break, Alexander suggests parents plan their child's day off to avoid unhealthy or unbeneficial habits from forming, such as playing video games or sleeping in all day long.
