A student who was diagnosed with life-threatening blood clots on the brain after waking up with blurred and double vision at Christmas last year, which could have resulted in a stroke if it had not been picked up during a routine eye test, has thanked her optometrist after doctors were left stumped by her symptoms.
Urged to go to hospital by her optometrist, Alex was diagnosed with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, which are clots on the brain that usually affect older people, and was given a lumbar puncture to relieve pressure. Originally from Nottingham, Alex was spending time at home with her parents during the Christmas break from university when she started to suffer from painful migraines.
It was not until she woke up one morning with blurred and double vision that she decided to make an eye appointment at Specsavers West Bridgford, as she started to worry that the issue was related to her eyes.“The first thing the optometrist said to me during the OCT was that my optic nerve was blurred and swollen and I didn’t even know that was a thing.
During that time Alex underwent treatment including a lumbar puncture to reduce pressure in her brain. She will need to stay on blood thinners for another four months but other than that, she has said she is “back to normal”.
