Family members of the Victor Valley High student say deputies used excessive force. The department says the girl tried to take a deputy’s pepper ball launcher.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the actions ofa 16-year-old, 120-pound girl and throwing her down after the department said she reached for another deputy’s pepper ball launcher during a melee outside a high school football stadium in Victorville on Friday, Sept. 22.

Los Angeles-based activist Edin Enamorado, holding a megaphone, leads a protest in Victorville, Calif., on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023. The protest was in response to a viral video showing what appears to be a Southern California sheriff’s deputy slamming a teenage girl to the ground during a fight outside a Friday night high school football game, a use of force her mother says sent the 16-year-old to the hospital with injuries to her head and spine.

On Sunday, protesters angry at the deputy showed up at about 11 a.m. at the sheriff’s Victorville station, where the department said some of them blocked a patrol car that attempted to enter a parking lot and tried to open its door. The crowd eventually dispersed. Four people were arrested on Sunday: a 27-year-old Riverside resident, a 40-year-old Pomona resident, a 30-year-old Victorville resident and a 36-year-old resident of Moreno Valley. The allegations were unlawful assembly, assault with a caustic chemical, felony assault on a peace officer and obstructing a peace officer.

“The deputy deployed pepper balls toward the ground in an effort to disperse the crowd, but the effort was ineffective, and the parties began moving toward the deputy. As additional deputies arrived, another pepper ball round was deployed toward the subjects and a 16-year-old female grabbed the pepper ball launcher. A deputy pulled the female away causing her to land on the ground. During the incident, a 16-year-old male punched one of the deputies in the face.

It was then that the second deputy, who has not been publicly identified, picked up Jeffers and tossed her to the ground.
