Doctors had been unable to tell Alex, 20, what was wrong - but a trip to the optician saved her life

A student who was diagnosed with life-threatening blood clots on the brain after waking up with blurred and double vision at Christmas last year, which could have resulted in a stroke if it had not been picked up during a routine eye test, has thanked her optometrist after doctors were left stumped by her symptoms.

“I was told if it hadn’t been picked up it could have developed into something much worse and could have potentially become life-threatening, so I am very thankful to my optometrist for caring enough to listen properly to me.” It was not until she woke up one morning with blurred and double vision that she decided to make an eye appointment at Specsavers West Bridgford, as she started to worry that the issue was related to her eyes. Alex said: “I went in just after New Year and they gave me an OCT scan.

Despite the “scary” diagnosis, Alex said she was relieved to finally have an answer to her health problems. She said: “I’d been feeling ill for a while and was looking for an answer. From looking up things online, I’d found a lot of other worse options like brain tumours and meningitis so to find out that it was blood clots, something I didn’t need brain surgery for, was actually a relief.

Now, while Alex still does experience the occasional migraine, she said her symptoms are “nothing as bad” as the intense migraines that led to her diagnosis. She is also considered to be low risk regarding the clots reoccurring.
