The WA Police Force needs to recruit more officers from overseas, but some highly-qualified applicants are learning too late that they can't get the necessary visa.

"There's certainly plenty of people in our situation and not for one second do I think this is something that only affects us."

"I know of one person who has gotten to the end of the process, but I know of several who have pulled out once they knew this was the absolutely guaranteed outcome, that they would not get their visa," she said. "The state government has said repeatedly, when challenged on this matter, 'It's not our problem'," Dr Gothard said.

"They should be taking it up with the federal government … I think the state government should be pushing very strongly for waivers for all visa applicants."Police Minister Paul Papalia said it was the federal government's responsibility to determine who came into Australia.
