HAMBURG, Germany - Thousands of students in the German port city of Hamburg marched out of school on Friday led by teenage Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg to call for more action on climate change.
The protest is part of a global movement known as “School Strike 4 Climate” or “Fridays For Future” launched last August when Thunberg began protesting outside the Swedish parliament on school days. Thunberg said the school strikes would go on until politicians took firmer action against climate change.
The Hamburg demonstrators also demanded an end to coal-fired energy. Germany is planning to phase out coal by 2038 and has imposed higher emission standards on cars, but higher costs for cleaner vehicles and power are concerns for the government and the industry.
Well done to the German students. I am sure Germany’s PM Angela Merkel and other Germans politicians aren’t going to patronise them that should rather stay at school and study, just like those in UK.
Why are the signs in English?
The “climate youth”?
Climate changes daily...;)
We all need clean our planet 🌎 from trash that is rotting and produce very dangerous gases... fighting and trashing will not solve problems... actions on all levels as we all breath air regardless... time for common sense
German kids have been screwing things up forever. In the 1970s and 1980s their stance against nuclear power led us to where we are now, their parents were shellshocked but their Opas and Omas... well, we know what they did, so I say, no, don't listen to Germans.
They should protest in front of Chinese or Indian embassy.
Mommy.... I got soccer practice in 30 minutes, can you drive me to the field?
These students did not do this on their own. This was orchestrated by an adult who is brainwashing these youngsters. Climate religion is more damaging than the potential issues they are complaining about.
This kid ain't messing around.
The Green New Deal will be economically devasting to certain industries the same way the internal combustion engine killed the horse and buggy industry. Climate change will reign in economic winners & losers.
