Surrey school board asking for $10.5 million to cover cost of 20 to 30 more portables

VICTORIA — The Surrey school board is pleading for more than $10 million from the provincial government to pay for extra portables needed for students next year.

Premier John Horgan’s government promised in the 2017 election to eliminate the use of portables in Surrey schools within four years and cut their use in half within two years. “In my time it’s the most we’ve ever had,” said Allen. “We’ve never enjoyed the kind of growth we’re seeing.” “And that has led to an increased demand for portables because the class size and class composition language the B.C. Liberals ignored unlawfully are now being implemented. On top of that Surrey is the fastest growing district in the province. The Surrey school district hopes to have 11 new school construction projects underway by the end of this year as part of the expedited construction project office operated with the government, said Allen.
