Government benches mostly empty for debate inspired by schoolchildren’s climate strike

In the week that the UK experienced its hottest ever winter day, just a handful of government MPs attended a debate on climate change in parliament on Thursday. .

Like the Lords (and there's a lot wrong with that system too) their salaries should rely on them at least turning the fuck up and pretending to take an interest. Arseholes.

To be honest there is very little they can do, all the damage was done in the 19th century with the industrial revolution. While this country is looking at renewables and electric cars the third world are looking at and using coal fire power stations and petrol cars.

Those who didn't turn up....shame on them

Typical

you have omitted that the this was a Backbench Business Committee debate. Misleading.

Obviously too busy celebrating their pay rise.

why are they being paid? I don't show up for work...I don't get paid.

JuliaLopezMP were you present for the debate?

JonCruddas_1 Can you confirm if you attended this debate? If not, why not?

This was not a debate as such, I watched it on the parliament channel, the level of understanding was poor the message apocalyptic and 100% one sided. The only debating point was when Ed Davey was reminded of Hinkley Point!

Another example of how much the current model of Parliament is a failure.

DavidLammy David, were you here?

Many MPs were quick to criticise the children who made an effort to demonstrate on the issue - shame few could show the same commitment and effort when they were called on to do so.

They're not going to be here, when the shit hits the fan, so they don't give a shit.

Loving the enormous turnout from the government, real enthusiasm right here

Kids don't decide how the country is run.

Shambles151 Crowded out with tories

Looking at this one would think the MPs were not on climate strike, but striking against climate strike. Which would reflect the generally loathsome attitude toward the issue displayed by a large part of that house's occupants.

Really!!! So poor.

Disgusting! At least the next generation are on the ball!😡

Typical ..when cameras are rolling they pretend they care ...

NeilDotObrien I do hope that you attended such an important debate?

Very poor sight. With Brexit it's full house. With climate change school's out. Brexit can't be solved. Climate change can be countered.

Another clear indication that our political system is not fit for purpose. Time for a complete overhaul from top to bottom, people have had enough

When images like this circulate a year apart you would think it would be a wake up call. But nope full house when they debate their next pay rise though.

Thy don't care do they. The sun was shining the other day and I as to take my jacket off. It's FEBRUARY!

MPs debate climate after school strike – but only a handful turn up

This was a meeting of the Backbench Business Committee, which has eight members. Its purpose is to determine how to present the issue to the full House. But you know that.

‘MPs debate climate after school strike – but only a handful turn up’ Perhaps they were too busy with media engagements, talk radio, newspaper articles to write, crafting soundbites to trend on Twitter? It’s all about the profile x

At least, seing from the pic, if they start shooting one another, there will be few victims

Chumps

Vote them out.

Obviously a very unimportant issue in the lives of MPs

So a number of MPs including TM criticised the children for missing school to protest about the lack of action or interest by adults. HOW RIGHT THEY WERE. Elected representatives didn’t even bother to debate it. Do they not understand the crisis? environment Parliament

Wankers

Look how many Tories care.

Nice to see our politicians have their priorities in order 🤦‍♂️

Just after giving themselves a 2.7% pay rise to just shy of 80K a year. Disgraceful, the lot of them.

climatechange is the most important issue we face as a species. Utterly pathetic by the majority of MPs not to be at this debate.

Disgraceful, especially now they have been given a pay rise higher than Commons staff.

This lot need to go... I wouldn't trust them to run a bath, let alone a country!

Bet they will all be there to drink to their pay rise. 😜 Parliament.

Coming generations will piss on our graves and curse that we ever existed. As they should.

No doubt handsomely paid to stay away

Very disappointed by the turnout, of MPs after their pay rise. Brexit is an important issue for our future. Climate change is a very important issue for our and the future generations of the United Kingdom and the rest of the world.

Could there ever be a clearer demonstration of the total disregard with which the vast majority of MP's hold for the future of young people by not even bothering to turn up to first debate on climate in 2 years.

Shame we don't employ Truant Officers to look after them...

Future generations will look back and wonder what the hell our leaders were doing! We cannot even claim ignorance nowadays either, we know exactly what is happening but as normal we are chasing fictional numbers $$$ and have ppl like Trump claiming climate change is not real.

Followed by UK Poverty debate and the bar fills up some more. Make it a double there old chap.

Wow. I actually agree with Zac Goldsmith. Must be in an alternate universe.

Everyone wants the flashy meetings, but no one wants to debate real issues.

Disgraceful
