One charity says it sees the impact of increasing costs on families everyday.

A campaign has been launched to reverse an "unacceptable" increase in the cost of school dinners across Nottinghamshire. Current plans will see the cost of meals going up by £2 a week from October 16, with factors including the rising costs of energy, staffing and food being blamed.

But members of the Independent Alliance opposition group at Nottinghamshire County Council have now written to the authority's leadership opposing its price hike. One of them is Independent Councillor Steve Carr, who represents Bramcote and Beeston North, and said: "It beggars belief that in the middle of a cost of living crisis they can stick an extra 40p on each and every school dinner."Right across Nottinghamshire, child poverty is at record levels.

Donna Cumberlidge, the Chief Officer of Citizens Advice Nottingham and District, said: "We would encourage anyone struggling with increasing costs and meeting their financial commitments to seek early advice and support from an advice centre. Advice Nottingham in the city are available to support people with advice and assessing eligibility for benefits. It's also worth families checking if they could be eligible for free school meals which can help with costs.

Another one of those seeking a reversal is Independent Councillor Francis Purdue-Horan, who represents Bingham East and said: "If the Conservatives have their way, the price rises will kick in on October 16. All the evidence shows that child poverty is worse with families who just lose out on free school meals due to the low eligibility level.
