Lancaster University has retained its place as the top-ranked higher education institution in the North West

All but one of Greater Manchester's universities have increased their positions in the national pecking order, according to The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024.

Manchester Metropolitan University, which came fourth regionally, also rose one place to 59th overall. The University of Bolton was the highest jumper, going from 124th last year to joint 106th. However, the University of Salford dropped from 88th to 91st in the new list. "It is more competitive to get a place at many of our top institutions; the cost of attending university has soared, leaving graduates with extraordinary debt; and in many cases campus life still bears the scars of the pandemic."It means any prospective student, parent or carer needs to think hard about whether university is the right choice, and then where to study and what subject.
