TWU’s new health sciences center will help the school graduate 30% more nurses and health professionals to tackle the rural health provider shortage.

Ray, who has a doctorate in physiology from the University of Georgia, felt TWU needed a center to educate students in Denton and first applied for the necessary tuition revenue bonds from the state soon after he joined TWU in 2016. Tuition revenue bonds were not approved then, but were finally approved in 2021. The state hadn’t passed a tuition revenue bond bill since 2015.“I really have to give thanks to our representative [Lynn] Stucky and [state Sen.

“We believe that’s going to lead to more team-based science, more team-based education, which is really critical in these programs,” he said.That is supported by building infrastructure designed around practice. The center will include labs, classrooms, outdoor clinic sites, community health clinics and a teaching kitchen. It will also feature updated telehealth infrastructure to serve patients in and beyond Denton.
