Enjoying time together during August of 2022 are longtime friends Don Hazelton, left, and Harold Barkhouse. ContributedWeakening Lee will have widespread impact this weekend | SaltWireWhen hearing of the recent passing of Don Hazelton, an early life-lesson came back to me. Away back, as young people, some educators taught the four D’s of success – desire, determination, dedication, and discipline.

Don and Doady Hazelton were the proud parents of six sons, Chris, Jeff, Bill, Bob, David Jon, and Peter. It was 44 years ago that the oldest son left home. “It was nice to see such a nice turnout of umpires at the service,” David Jon noted. “The list would include Harold Barkhouse, Terry Henderson, Danny Joseph, Donald Harvey, Clinton Harvey, Darren Gerrior, Eric Storr, Howard Horn, George Dickie and of course family members.”It brought a smile as David Jon calculated that including Don, there were 10 immediate Hazelton family members who took up umpiring. A September 2015 interview with Don’s grandson Patrick Hazelton is recalled.

“Highlights would include umpiring two senior men’s nationals and I have been fortunate to have worked two international tournaments in New Zealand," Patrick, 33, said. “I think about my grandfather Don Hazelton nearly every time I step on the field. He had so many pieces of advice and words of wisdom. Yes, I think of him every game.”

“Dad did the best he could to be a good father, husband, and provider. I honestly have no clue how Mom and Dad made it all happen with six boys who were involved in everything and were separated by less than 11 years in age. The number of times I heard people say, ‘your poor mother,’ are too numerous to count.”“Dad credited sports with saving his life. Sports gave him purpose, and a sense of family, and exposed him to people who had a positive impact on his life.
