A student died hours after reheating spaghetti bolognese he had left over from a previous meal. The 20-year-old student fell ill within 30 minutes of eating the leftovers and went to bed to sleep it off.The case has been featured in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology. The report says the dinner had been left at room temperature for a number of days before the student finished it then went out to play sports with friends, reports The Mirror.

He returned half an hour later and complained of a headache and stomach pains before enduring vomiting and diarrhoea. He went straight to bed to sleep it off. His time of death was ruled to be around 4am, approximately 10 hours after he ate the meal.Dr Bernard, a licensed medical provider based in the US, outlined the case in a YouTube video. He said: “Many people eat pasta, or any other form of noodles, that are leftover for a day or two and they’re fine.

In AJ’s case, faecal swabs taken post-mortem revealed the presence of Bacillus cereus, a well-known food-borne pathogen which produces toxins, in his system. Samples of the student's leftovers sent to the National Reference Laboratory for Food-borne Outbreaks for analysis also revealed a significant presence of B. cereus.

Although B. cereus is associated mainly with food poisoning, it is being increasingly reported to be a cause of serious and potentially fatal non-gastrointestinal-tract infections, according to the US National Library of Medicine. Dr Bernard said the severity of the illness suffered by AJ, who died in October 2008, is not "typical" but it is still important to practise proper food storage techniques to avoid any incidents. It is recommended to refrigerate perishable food items within two hours of preparation. Fresh poultry, fish and ground meats should be eaten or frozen two days after cooking, and beef, veal, lamb or pork, within three to five days.
