A university program that targets students interested in medicine as early as year 9 could prove crucial in addressing Australia's ongoing healthcare crisis.

A UNSW program is identifying high school students interested in medicine and mentoring them until they reach university

"[At my] small school, we didn't have things like career advisors that other bigger schools might have," Jack said. The 17-year-old graduated alongside seven classmates at his school in Wagga Wagga and has just started his first semester of medical school as part of a mentoring program run by the University of New South Wales.

There are 153 GPs per 100,000 people in regional areas compared with 208 in major Australian cities, according to figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
