Harrisburg School District receiver Dr. Lori Suski halted the $6.8 million demolition to reconsider final alternatives put forth by community members.

“This meeting tonight should have been held before any decision was made or any contract was entered to demolish the building,” said Corky Goldstein, who has lived near the school for more than 50 years. “You unintentionally created your own confrontation.”“I absolutely agree with that,” she said at the end of the meeting. “But as someone [another resident who attended the meeting] said, we can’t go back sometimes.

“Once it was presented, the Pennsylvania Department of Education said that the application would not be approved with William Penn in the application, which at that point in time, we had to punt,” said Turman. However, the school says something needs to be done. The building has been damaged by time, numerous fires, squatters, graffiti and vandalism. The district also was having trouble obtaining property insurance for the building.Depending on the scale, preserving parts of the building could cost between $3 to $5 million, in addition to the cost of demolishing the remainder of the property, Straub said.

She said the final decision is going to take creative thinking and financing to address the district’s and the community’s needs.
