Argyll and Bute Council last week confirmed that John Logie Baird Primary on Winston Road has sections containing reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), which has forced more than 100 schools across England to close.

The local authority says that mitigation measures have been introduced to keep pupils and staff safe, and that work will take place over the next year to make the school safe.

“The safety of staff and pupils is a priority and immediate measures are already in place to mitigate and reduce any concerns in affected parts of the building. This includes restricting access, temporary propping and ongoing monitoring. Iain Morris, the SFRS’ acting director of asset management, said: “The safety of our staff is paramount and immediate action was taken as soon as defects to the roof construction were identified in 14 of our sites in 2019.

Addressing the situation MSP Jackie Baillie said: “It is incredibly concerning that schools in England have been forced to close at such short notice. “We need to ensure that the safety of both staff, pupils and the wider community is the paramount consideration.”
