Weapons detectors will be installed at DuVal High School on Wednesday, two days after a 16-year-old girl was shot and killed while leaving the school, according to a letter from the principal to families.Prince George’s County Public Schools expedited the security equipment, according to Superintendent Millard House II.
On Tuesday, police identified the teen who was killed as Jayda Medrano Moore. She was a member of the high school’s girls basketball team and dreamed of turning pro with the Women’s National Basketball Association, according to a GoFundMe appeal started by a family member. She was just a few weeks short of turning 17.“Her potential, quite frankly, boundless. Her dreams and aspirations, her talent, promising,” House said at a news conference Monday night.
Police were still searching Tuesday for the person who fired the shot. They said they did not know whether Jayda was involved in the dispute. They were also investigating whether the groups were students or adults. “It’s very eye-awakening that she was just walking home and her life got taken so quickly, so fast,” Brown said.Brown said she was at softball practice Monday when she saw players on the field hiding behind bleachers. The soccer team was playing a game against Bowie High School.Students didn’t know what was happening, Brown said. They went into the small gym for a few minutes and then were rushed into the school cafeteria, where they remained on lockdown from 3:55 until about 5 p.m.
