The Indiana public school teacher collective bargaining season is close to starting with school boards across Northwest Indiana holding brief public sessions heralding the launch of negotiations for new contracts.

Formal bargaining begins after Sept. 15 and districts and their teacher unions have until Nov. 15 to reach a contract agreement and ratify it.

As is typical at most hearings, Hobart Superintendent Peggy Buffington said no one offered testimony at the Hobart hearing Thursday. She said there was support mentioned by officials for the efforts put forth by teachers. The district is still controlled by the state and its newly appointed school board isn’t expected to gain governing authority until next year.
