Both Geography and history were removed as core subjects from the Junior Cert last year, making them optional

Ridiculous that Irish was not made optional. Having a basic knowledge of History and Geography has a tangible benefit to thos entering the working world upon leaving school. Asking to go to the toilet in Irish doesn’t.

Parents are the first educators of their children and they are the ones paying taxes. DEMAND that these subjects be returned to the curriculum because this is not about anything other than their agenda.

Sad and stupid decision.

Democracy hates those subjects.

Ah lads

A backwards step for education I think .

Thank god they still have to learn a language that is taught as being non conversational.

Because this worked so well in the UK.

That seems a really sad/bad move. Having lived in a few different countries I’m always amazed at how good the old inter and leaving very education was. Keep them in.

That's insane! 😭😭 Ignorance is not bliss

Beyond idiotic.

Why would anyone do this? History and Geography should be a core subject!! It’s often the only exposure people get to those subjects in their lifetime.

Yup. Liberal indoctrination in full swing. It is easier for them not to teach these subjects than change them to fit their agenda.

Sadly many will not now have the opportunity to learn from histories mistakes, and avoid repeating them. The 'political' & 'sense of place' learning from studying Geography / Borders / Climate cannot be underestimated. Sad really.

Imagine the day a student doesn’t no every county in Ireland and not to mention we had a Rising in 1916 🙈

All the emphasis is now on tech., tech. & more tech, to the detriment of more fundamental and profound sources of knowledge & wisdom.

Just get rid of Irish and be done with it, waste of time

Going down the route of our uneducated neighbours

Restore both please

Here's a perfect example of why Geography should be restored, via JimmystaffordDJ

lukep147 SeanB1099 disgraceful

Who thought this was a good idea? These subjects should be core subjects.

Plenty books in a library to learn

this is no surprise since I clearly remember the so called Christian Brothers (fascists) years ago promoting anything only truth in either geography or history...

But sodomy will be mandatorily taught

HardcoreHistory 😔

Here swear that pic looks like our school hahahha kevaaclarke DylanIBrady

Did I mention the Leo said terrorists are still welcome also....

So long as Irish and catholicism and our national identity is wiped out its all fine folks. Nothing to see her...its all about the LGBTQ and all in sundry coming from all parts ofbthe world to take up our houses sxhools jobs and hospital beds.

jamieurt

For a country who considers itself global, it seems funny to not promote how we got to this point and where we are amoung the other nations. Irish kids will soon be indistinguishable from Americans or the British and will know about as much as them.

As cost cutting measures go, this is surely one of the stupidest i have come across

Dreadful idea, education isn’t just about getting points or ready for business, it’s about broadening your mind, exposure to all subjects should be mandatory until after junior cert

and history? both defintely need to be re-instituted

We are being convinced that there’s no career for historians, just study STEM.. to supply the MNC’s with sheep like workers...

“History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.”

Wahey! I failed both subjects in my JC!

Wow so excited for the next generation to have no sense of historical awareness or even an understanding of their own heritage and cultural history. Geography goes beyond rocks and rivers, basic awareness of country location, human geography, cultural Irish geography are all KEY

Given our turbulent history, and how recent it is, removing history from the JC cycle will have dire consequences going forward. Whoever thought this decision was correct needs to reevaluate their decision making skills.

They dont want the youth enlightened by the historical mistakes!! A generation as thick as americans before we know it!!! Is Irish history still being taught?

And history, those who choose to ignore it are destined to repeat it.

Has our Department of Education any idea of how important a base in Geography & History is for young people. Very few students take History for Leaving Cert now as they've made the subject too large and it's harder to get high scores in it.

Whatever about Geography, History needs to be compulsory. Kids can't grow up not knowing where they came from, part of identity

What groups or academics pushed this threw.

We can't expect this new wave of non irish migrants to know our history or geography, so its only fair we remove it from the curriculum all together. Plus if we dont teach it to our kids, they wont have national pride, making them easier to control. Win Win.

Stupid.

The geography i learned in school is pretty worthless now. Geography of Europe has changed a lot sjnce then. Who's to say there won't be more change ourdating it again in a few years

To destroy a people you must first sever their roots People who know their history will never vote Fine Gael That's why mariawalsheu is being sent to schools to take down the Irish flag and replace it with the LGBT one

Marxist indoctrination. Globalists shouldn't be let near kids.

Everything in the country will be named after a fast food or drinks company. People won't know who they are or where they are. A dumbed-down population is easier to control and manipulate. What's next for abolition?

That is a very stupid decision.

Disgusting...

Claire_McGing And history? Else you end up like the Brexiteers with their half-baked Blitz fantasies...

Yes.

The education system will make children to recite Shakespeare but yet it’s optional to learn the history of your own country? That’s very questionable...

What kind of people make these decisions I’m baffled! How about getting first aid on the curriculum? Or is that just not that important either 🙄

Educated for life . Not for the workforce. Retrograde campaignforleo

It's honestly disgraceful. The education system is more interested in creating workers than an intelligent generation of Irish people.

The dumbing down of Ireland is STARTING....

So it's not a priority anymore to know about the past? Or about what shapes the environment around us? Well sure why would you need to know all that when we have nuclear weapons to keep our peace and Google maps to tell us all we need to know. We're genius now... Aren't we? 🤔

Both subjects i was only interested in growing up, and unfortunetly had to decide which one id go on and do for the leaving cert as i wasnt allowed to do both. The whole system is a joke in ireland. But lookit, im sure glad i learnt that Sylvia Plath poem to help me in life 😑

Irish education is mutating into a system for supplying clone-like workers to foreign companies operating here, rather than being a method for enhancing and restating the Irish nation.

Well as long as memorizing old Irish poems remains mandatory 🙈 'Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.'

Claire_McGing It is high time to wonder who and why sme try to obscure our identities since 'explains' who we are subsequently such knowledge facilitates the way to understand both ourselves and others and live better together.

Irish history needs to be compulsory in all schools. The ppl need to learn about the history of our country. The minister of education should be ashamed

Both subjects still compulsory for my son in 1st year in his school.

I only have to guess what kind of nonsensical studies you guys are going to replace it, when dystopia comes you better bet I’ll be a raider with a big sword

Remove all knowledge of past and surroundings. Make people fear the outside world and travel. Has someone been reading brave new world ?

Pathetic

Is there a Governmental plan to ensure that schools make every effort to instill complete ignorance in our children? Has somebody lost the ever-friggin’ plot? How can One live without Geography? Quo Vadis?

Let's remove the stuff that makes people understand the world they live in and, in doing so, make them dumber and more docile. Yay! 😓

Given the amount of idiots who think we “won freedom for the 26 counties (sic) in 1916,” I don’t think compulsory history has been going too well. Add to that the fact that most Irish people use ‘England’ instead of ‘the UK,’ and geography isn’t going too well either.

Much like universities failing to give a 'universal' education anymore, becoming career creating factories. Without history especially, schools are forcing a narrow career focus mindset on pupils that will damage society and our heritage.

This is beyond stupid

WHAT

This is completely dreadful - you cannot say you are educating young people if you leave these subjects out.

Removal of history was a shocker

This is crazy. Whatever about geography our younger generation are struggling with their knowledge of irish history and the roots of state. Why are they doing this?

Bring it back! I had the choice of one and looking back I wish I had to do both! Clueless with history and these subjects are so important! Next they’ll be adding how to use Facebook or a selfie as an option!

Rising stars and potential PM material Raab and Hunt got by with no knowledge of history / geography. Didn't hurt their prospects..😂👍😂

Is the strategy that Irish people end up so thick about who they are and where they come from that we Brexit ourselves like that shower of amadáns in the UK!?

💔

Christ, look at England if you wanna see what happens when people don’t know geography or history

Will be as dumb as America at this rate.

Removal of these ‘traditional’ subjects was pandering to the thousands of immigrant children who don’t understand our history and geography and the fluffy parents who want waffly social subjects like diversity and gender studies. WeAreIrish RTENews

Unbelievable.

Claire_McGing In NI we had the option of geog, history or business studies. I felt like I really missed out not taking both history and geography!

With Bruyon as Minister for Ed was it surprising? Trying to dumb down and make Trump types of all- knowledgeless.

Claire_McGing History is far more important

Big mistake removing both just look at the disaster next door with the oceans of clueless brexit unwashed

The big issues that will face these children in adulthood in the mid 21st century will be land use, urban planning, management of natural resources, housing, climate change etc. All learned about in Geography!! This is a very cynical move indeed.

Dumbing down the natives in the pursuit of saving money. Can't see it stopping here though.

Dumming down a once respected exam.

Restore History and leave out the Viking stuff. Go straight in with Chairman Mao and his Little Red Book. Then the kids will at least see it coming.

This is what always happens, Fine Gael policies get stupider and piss more and more people off. The people finally wake up and vote them out. We need a strong party with more foresight, strong on economy, and not pushing back against intl socialist pressures.

More nonsense from this Government

emma_okelly The only compulsory subjects at JC are English, Irish and Maths. History and Geography like all the other subjects have not been downgraded. Science is not compulsory either - surely Science should also be compulsory IrishSciTeach JctScience

As a teacher (not geography) I can see that we are about to drive off the cliff - standards will dip and more makeup up stuff offered as short courses etc - all sitting in a circle and all that jazz

All part of the push towards a federal Eu.

So no future generation will know about the world wars. War of independence and the cival war or about the famous revolutionaries. Ridiculous that this is even being considered

A basic knowledge of history and geography is needed now more than ever.

Yes it shud b restored . its an importint subject

thats a shortcut to stupidland

This campaign smacks of snobbery re the voluntary schools sector For almost half the second level sector (ie VEC/ETB) History and Geography was not a core subject and that should be pointed out by RTE

What? Children should learn both geography and history. They should also be able to recite it. So much for well rounded education. smh

History and Geography were already optional in State schools

Removing history a mistake. We will have generations in the future clueless on Ireland's past, on WW s and the power of populist fascist leaders. And taking for granted the framework for peace.

History and geography are a must, no two ways about it, you only have to look at America for the best example of ignorance of both !!!

History has got to be a core subject. Ignoring the lessons of the past condemns you to repeating the same errors and you can’t know where you are headed if you don’t know where you come from!

emma_okelly There is a huge amount of misinformation out there on this topic. I’d love RTÉ to do an actual piece about the new JC and the many opportunities it brings for young people to do optional modules on climate change, environmental studies, intercultural studies, human rights etc...

geography is more than just where countries are located, its about their social, environmental, religious set ups. It includes imports, exports trends, agri trends, native species, changing landscapes. It tracts populations worldwide. Definitely should remain a core subject.

Just look at the us..ask any school child up to 16 or 18. They have not got a clue about where any where is in the world and dont know anything about the world..and think they speak American. Not english... this is what you want here. Thick, intitled, gobshites.

😮😮😮🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️😠😠😠

money saving department short-sightedness geography

The 2 subjects that can demonstrate your ignorance as an adult.

Removing these but keeping Irish is a ridiculous decision. I hated geography and dropped it as soon as I could but I still had to do it up to Transition Year

History to me must be on the cards?

Remove history & geography, but keep Irish? Talk about arse-ways priorities...

Everyone needs at least a basic understanding of both Geography and History. We are dumbing down our youth and should be ashamed of ourselves.

Why not remove Irish since it has no relevance whatsoever in the world other than some very small area's that speak it in Ireland. Complete clowns running the show as usual
