Gary’s new crop of state-appointed administrators say they hope to restore the libraries and plan to use the Glen Park Academy’s success story as a pilot before the state returns the district to local control, expected next year.In state reading scores released last month, just 47% of the district’s third-graders passed the Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination exam. It was the lowest score in Lake and Porter counties.
The district plans to eliminate its school library desert as part of a strategy to boost literacy rates. In February, it added book vending machines to reward students for accomplishments. GPA Principal Eric Worthington said he made the revival of the dormant school library a condition of his hiring in 2021.
“When young readers are able to read stories and see pictures of characters who look like them, there is an increased sense of pride and hopefully an increased desire to read,” he said.
