Rangers estimate there are between 160 and 200 dingoes on the island.A week out from the start of Queensland's busy school holidays, authorities are reminding tourists to be cautious around the wild animals when visiting the popular holiday spot.Rangers are urging people to stay close to their children, always walk in groups, camp in fenced areas where possible, lock up food and secure all rubbish and bait.Thousands of visitors travel to the island every year.
It said the decision was not taken lightly and was part of its commitment to keep visitors and residents on K'gari safe. In light of the recent attacks, rangers are urging visitors to avoid preparing or consuming food and lying on the beach, particularly around Eli Creek and lakeshore areas.
