Police had launched a desperate search for Matt Jackson five hours before he was struck by a train near Penwortham

A bright university student from Hoghton was tragically struck by a train after going missing in the early hours of the morning.

Derek Woolley, a fatalities investigator for British Transport Police, described the circumstances leading up to Matt's death to Assistant Coroner Richard Taylor. "The first report came into police at 4.32am in relation to an alleged incident at a hotel in the Preston area," Mr Woolley said. As part of his investigation Mr Woolley spoke to Matt's girlfriend, Sapphire Whittle, who said she had urged him to seek therapy for his mental health issues but he had refused. However, he had spoken to the university's student welfare team who were in the process of referring him for support.
