Mr Gibb said the Department for Education put forward a bid to rebuild 200 schools a year but the Prime Minister rejected it

confirmed that his department put forward a bid to rebuild 200 schools a year only for Mr Sunak to stump up funding for just 50 a year., who was permanent secretary at the DfE between 2016 and 2020, blamed the Prime Minister for failing to deliver enough funds to rebuild schools affected by reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete , despite warning that there was a “critical risk to life”.

“We put in a bid for 200 buildings but what Rishi agreed to was to continue the rebuilding programme at 50 a year, consistently what we’ve been doing since we’d been in office,” Mr Gibb said. When asked whether it was wrong to say there was a critical risk to life, Mr Gibb replied: “No I’m not saying that. What I’m saying is we had been building and refurbishing 50 schools a year since we came into office in 2010. And one of the first things Rishi did when he was Chancellor of the Exchequer was he announced the school rebuilding programme 500 schools to be rebuilt or refurbished between 2020 and 2030.

Labour has accused ministers of “shrugging their shoulders” despite repeated warnings about the risks posed by crumbling school buildings.
