School officials said the student was punished for being disruptive, not for refusing to recite the pledge.

No

This is a crying shame arresting a sixth grader for not pledging allegiance to the flag. Did Trump made a law that if anyone including a child doesn't pledge allegiance to the flag they go to jail? How many years they going to give him? 💯 Years?

Not newz; how about doing some real investigative journalism for a change? Disinformation operations doesn’t look good on you....

I don’t understand what is happening. Has the former ‘land of the free and home of the brave’ gone completely off the deep end?

Now that's pathetic!

Not good. Freedom includes the right to decent.

This is ridiculous. He should feel like he wants to say it....we should work on that! I myself recite the original version. Most probably don't know the difference.

No actual crime there so I doubt that he was charged for said offense.

Poor kid’s spending too much time on Twitter.

State enforced nationalism is a step on the path to fascism

Forced patriotism. Ugh. I remember my friend from elementary who was a SDA and didn’t do the pledge etc. This is getting nuts

So his teacher couldn’t simply ask him privately what his reasons were? This is not a criminal action. It could just be a stubborn kid having a bad day.

Suspension. Easy.

Sounds like the newest young psychotic Frankenstein mix of Kaepernick7 SenKamalaHarris SpeakerPelosi CoryBooker SenSchumer SenWarren that foxandfriends realDonaldTrump dbongino greggutfeld seanhannity TuckerCarlson warn us about!

*after refusing to leave for disrupting after being asked 20 times, making threats and resisting an officer

That's Florida for you!!!!😱

What? A child has a constitutional right not to say the pledge which when written was for white Male freedom and not 4 Black freedom.

Should of been expelled

The cops and the teacher along with the principle ahould be arrested for not knowing the 1st Amendment and that this is what this kid was doin.

I am so angry right now.

This is a purposely misleading headline, but what else would one expect from the Washington Post?

vlihunter How many adults does it take to calm a sixth grader in Florida? Arresting a child for not standing for the Pledge of Allegiance is an atrocity. I hope this child sues this school district for letting this situation get out of hand.

Arrested? Really? Ever heard of the First Amendment?

That charge needs to be dismissed immediately. Btw, who reported him? His teacher? His school? Disgraceful.

You shall have no other Gods before me. You shall not make for yourselves an idol.

Read the story people this is NOT why the kid got in trouble

How is this a misdemeanor?

theweathermanda The kid should take it up to the supreme court 😎

Read the story, very misleading headline

unacceptable. This young person is entitled to freedom of speech...even in a classroom.

Jack boots and re-education camps next at these schools?

Only in Flori-duh

Florida, still being Florida.

I hope you’re not trying to start a protest about the Pledge of Allegiance?

Please fix your tweet. It sounds like this is the cause of his charges. The police were clear. He was not arrested for refusing to recite the pledge.

America has a PIG POTUS who openly admits to groping women but arrests a child for believing in his rights?!!!

Zero credibility fake wapo at it again.

There is more to this fakenews story. Lets not forget this is the Washington Compost.

This kid is an American patriot defending our first Amendment rights!ACLU

Oh for gods sake!!

WTF

Fake news. The kid was NOT arrested for refusing to recite Pledge of Allegiance (which is NOT a crime), but instead, was arrested for “Disturbing the Peace / Disrupting School Grounds” (which IS a crime). Get it right, WaPo, and cut out the misleading, fake news reporting.

Fake news media back at it again

Caused by an inexperienced substitute teacher

This is outrageous! Respectfully protesting is a right in a democracy. FoxNews cnnbrk MSNBC realDonaldTrump SteveScalise SenJohnKennedy KamalaHarris SenBillCassidy SpeakerPelosi ananavarro ABC RepAOC

seems like the kid’s assessment of his school was correct

I support the Pledge of Allegiance but no one should be required say it until they are over the age of 18 can make a adult decision. If it at that time you do not wish to say it then let there be consequences.

This story seems to come down to a bad substitute teacher who was insufficiently trained on FL Law. As I understand it children are not required to mindlessly stand to salute the flag.

arachnais I hope some law firm decides to take this case. I knew a kid growing up that never stood up or recited the pledge of allegiance because of religious reasons. It was never a big deal and no one gave him a hard time. I am 53 so this was in the 70’s. Are we regressing?

Child was charged because of behavior that erupted after refusal of pledge. At least that’s the version I read and it sounded legit.

He was cited for public disorder not what the clickbait suggests.

Freedom of speech is also freedom of not speaking.

Jus like always their headlines insinuate. Going for shock value is sick. Arrested for not saying the pledge of allegiance, really!

DemocracyDiesByFakeNews

WHAT?!!!!!

If you read the story the “headline” is misleading...

Sounds like the substitute teacher in that class needs a lesson on the first amendment.

Not illegal

It’s the Cuban teachers fault! She felt prideful bc U.S let her in and now she was confused why he felt that way! Majority of Cubans also voted for Donald. Oh and many say they came in legally. 🙄🤣

Good. Kids need to be taught respect so they don’t grow up hating this country.

He should no more have to recite the Pledge of Allegiance than he should have to pray in school. I personally do not want to live in a country that feels it most force 'allegiance'...1984ism at its worst.

Blame his School! They never TAUGHT him properly! Floridians are getting STUPID!

I’m sure it was more related to the disruption as your own article indicates. FakeNews wapolies “The student was later charged with disruption of a school facility and resisting an officer without violence.”

Everything, absolutely everything was wrong in this situation.Everything but a student’s right to express his opinion in a respectful manner The rest? Unacceptable. What kind of education are we providing? If u don’t agree with the system, u don’t belong nor have a voice? ✊🏽♥️

Further evidence that we need a wall around Florida. BuildTheWallAroundFlorida

As a substitute HS teacher in AZ I've only had 3-4 classes in a semester in a half recite the national anthem... Not once did I complain to administration. I just complement the students on their behavior.

It's actually against the law for a school to force a child to say the pledge. The school is out of line, parents should take action against them.

Florida- many emigrants from WV

What is wrong with our education system? A misdemeanor, really? For a sixth grader?

We’ve been thru this year’s ago. She has that right. Case will be thrown out.

So much for freedom of thought in school.

This is how liberty dies....

Headlines for a communist country?, no just the latest for the USA.

Really - strange don't you think that is not what the story reads? Why don't you try to the truth for a change - you might find you like it! 🤔

Is that what really happened WP?

Go Florida a patriotic state. We love you

“Resisting an officer without violence”. So, just exercising his first amendment rights then.

Ignorant. No other words. On in Florida the new land of nuts.

He was arrested due to threatening everyone. Police stated: 'This arrest was based on the student’s choice to disrupt the classroom, make threats and resisting the officer’s efforts to leave the classroom'. You can't call everyone racist and threaten to 'beat them'.

Misleading click bait WP. Poor taste.

SAY IT OR DIE

Let's pick sides and jump to conclusions. It's not about fake news; it's about making money through reckless but legal rhetoric. WaPo is aping the National Enquirer.

Ridiculous this is his right not to stand. Where does it say you have to stand. This is America

Reeeaaaallllllllyyy?

God can you be any more fake. He was arrested for fighting with the teacher.

Misleading headline designed to stoke fear and division. “After” not “because”. WaPo is master of shameless brainwashing.

those local milk people are idiots...

That is bullshit. This is not Russia. This is America like it or not that young has the right to not say the pledge of allegiance if he doesnt want to. I dont agree with him but that's my right.

He was threatening everyone. HLN and CNN is still reporting that he was charged for not saying the pledge of allegiance. Fake news is also leaving out the rest of the story.

Start sending kids to the gym if they think their to good for our country. Have a home room class there.

That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. A sixth grader a misdemeanor for not standing for National Anthem. What in the world are you thinking Florida.

“Land of the free”.......

oh so we charging children that don’t stand ? what about amendment 1, or does that only work sometimes?

What’s that smell? Lawsuit, as the US law states students can not be forced to stand and recite the constitution.

Or, if you were honest, Florida sixth-grader charged with misdemeanor FOR CAUSING A SCENE after refusing to recite Pledge of Allegiance. But you do you

The sub teacher should have kept thoughts herself and asked boy to leave classroom, as Dean did. Boy then refused and became disruptive.

Maybe he’d feel like saying the pledge if he felt his country was trying to protect him from being shot while going to school...

That is BS! So glad I don’t live in Florida!

Ridiculous!

Wow we have really taken the NK route lately. Forced patriotism. This is not America

That headline is SUPER misleading. Please update it since 99% of people only read headlines.

Damn, my entire senior year of high school, I sat during the pledge of allegiance and prayers at assemblies. Never once got in trouble. My classmates were still my friends even though they disagreed with my silent protest.

This is a deceptive headline, the student was disciplined for being disruptive as pointed out in the article.Shame on you!

Your headline LIES!! He did not get a misdemeanor for refusing to recite pledge. Did you read your own story? What was the misdemeanor for? Right it was for something ELSE. Be better WP and don’t stoop to baiting.

C’mon Kaepernick7, why not pay a visit to support this kid?

Pretty sure the 1st amendment covers even kids....

The Lakeland Police Department said in a news release that the student was not arrested for refusing to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

“This arrest was based on the student’s choice to disrupt the classroom, make threats and resisting the officer’s efforts to leave the classroom,” the release said.

Can we just jump to the part where the ACLU steps in and corrects another inspired rogue maga member?

This is flat out illegal

Click bait. You should do better WaPo.

Florida in headline said it all. They never disappoint with the crazy. Can you spell lawsuit?

Fuuuuuuuuuck Florida. Sincerely, Florida.

This was settled as a free speech issue decades ago... Then again, it IS Florida.

I hope his parents sues the teacher. He doesn’t have to recite anything.

Journalism fail! Journalists 'Provide context. Take special care not to misrepresent or oversimplify in promoting, previewing or summarizing a story.' Readers own some responsibility too ... like, reading the story in multiple sources.

magamentality

It is funny how we are “free” in America until authority doesn’t like what we do...

What a completely misleading headline!!!

He got charged for his disruptive behavior

Freedom of speech? Right. State controlled loyalty. Nazis and Soviets did this to citizens. NAZIS — GOP

What a 'free country'. 🤣

First Amendment dip sh.........ts.

The kid is a chronic problem child. This had nothing to do with standing for the pledge and stop making that the phony issue here for Christ's sake!

Excellent

Hey ACLU do your thing!

13%

Abuse of power and downright mean. Shame on the adults

Headline is a little misleading. He did refuse but the teacher escalated the issue. We don’t live in Russia or China or NK. We don’t have forced nationalism

Dishonest journalism

Washington Compost

Okay the headline is basically the same on liberal, conservative & moderate media sources. This is no fake news, it is about a substitute teacher, who btw is no longer allowed to teach in the county, deciding to confront an 11 year old and him being arrested. PledgeofAllegiance

How misleading. He wasn't arrested for not saying the pledge, but because he took a huge fit and acted a fool.

WhatI want to know is why the teacher got confrontational with the student. Why she suggested he 'go live somewhere else' if he thought Anerica was so bad. Sure seems the complete wrong venue & time to have a heated discussion with a student !

This is the type of hack journalism that destroys the integrity of journalism. He didn't get arrested for not receiving pledge. He was arrested for disruption.

The Misdemeanor should be placed on his Awful parents! Disgraceful!

Everyone needs to remember that living here and a citizen makes you a American! We said it when I grew up nothing wrong with making kids say it today either!

What is wrong with the drinking water in Florida.

Slap him around. He'll be better for it.

Stupid!

When I was in elementary school in the 70's we had kids in my class who were Jehova's Witnesses who didn't recite the pledge like the rest of us & no teacher ever said a word.

Forcing kids to say the pledge every day is so unsettling and unseemly It’s a compelled political oath that has nothing to do with education

The student had the right to refuse.

Nice headline, completely misleading. This is why the media’s credibility is so poor. Editors - How do they work?

So the teacher broke the law and the student gets punished.... One nation, highly divisible, with Liberty and justice for rich white men.

The dictatorship...

Home of the “free” and land of the brave.

Can the fake president recite the Pledge of Allegiance ?

That’s bullshit the stupid teacher should’ve known what constitutional rights are standing for the pledge or the national anthem is not a law

Kid heard about Kaepernick getting a big pay day for being a victim he wanted to be one to

'The student was later charged with disruption of a school facility and resisting an officer without violence,' 'Resisting without violence'? How can that be an offence? What did the 11 year old do? Talk back? America is quickly deteriorating.

Biased.....was charged after 'threatening a teacher'...not for refusing to recite the pledge. Nice negative spin WashPo....you do it so well.

Hopefully expelled also

Terribly misleading headline. Another shit job by the wapo.

The right NOT to participate in the pledge of allegiance has been protected by the SCOTUS multiple times in the past. This will not fly and the school district and police gonna get a whoopin’...

Fix your headline 🙄 misleading

Really?

there goes the NFL career

Florida will sentence him to 10 years (in a for profit prison of course) for not being enough of a mindless follower to pledge the pledge. No Freedom in the USA!!

Wha....? Well, America... with Trump as our “President”, we can say goodbye to democracy and settle into this newly born dictatorship.

You might be a Redneck if you think not reciting the Pledge of Allegiance is a criminal act.

Indoctrinate them young. Right libs?

no obligation to recite Pledge.

What's Hillary charged with?asking for a friend.

Never count on florida to do the right thing. EVER.

🙄

Virginia: We’re the worst state! West Virginia: Hold my beer. Kentucky: Hold MY beer. Florida: Fellas, fellas... hold all of my beers and watch the master!

What was the charge, violation of the kids Constitutional Right to keep his mouth shut. The ACLU lawyers should have a field day with this bullshit. Florida man, they’re all crazy from the heat !

Lawsuit

America 2019

If you don’t like our country, please leave.

Hell yeah!

So when the fuck is this illegal

Stop lying. He was arrested for threatening staff

🙄smh

This headline Misleading, he's NOT being charged with a misdemeanor because of the pleadge its because of his behaviour to the staff after refusing to say the pleadge,

Easy to scare and traumatize a kid. Bullies.

And this is how the school to prison system is working in the US. Get them in there young.

Only in Florida

Cmon Florida smh

Florida is Best Place to Film Next Deliverance Movie😂😂. Take your kids & RUN FAR AWAY.

Good!

WTH!?

Forced patriotism is fascism.

China and Russia have built their millitary so strong during obama years, now they can destroy America, very scary

Wow, it’s always Florida!

Think there was a parts 2 and 3 to this story and most of it has nothing to do with pledge. In fact the trigger might have been just any routine teacher instruction to student. Read the full account not just click bait

Too early for April Fools posts. Or am I reading the Onion?

THEscubasteve

What happened to the principals office?

Seriously. You must be in a third world country

I hope the family sues the school district, the teacher and the police. No one HAS TO recite the pledge!!!!!!!!!!

Why does WP use this title on there tweet. Misleading!

Is that real?

KRansonArtist Good job proving his point, school staff and officers.

What is the difference between the pledge that kids and adults have to recite and the Muslim kids reciting their Quran at the madrasas? Please explain.

ACLU ACLUFL

The teacher confrontation with the student was uncalled for. She needs to be discipline for her harsh remarks. the whole thing could've been avoided.

I'm surprised he wasn't shot down immediately by a firing squad. Nuts. You've become nuts, my dear American friends.

This makes less sense than Donald Trump president. Actually, scratch that. Nothing makes less sense than that.

Charged? With misdemeanor? A school kid? Man... the US is turning into a parody.

If a sized-grader is charged with a misdemeanor for refusing to recite Pledge of Allegiance, what will Trump and family be charged for for robbing tax payer's money and selling out America to the Russians?

Cruelty to America on children

How about look up the real story and the statement the police gave that it had nothing to do with the pledge and everything to do with his out of control behavior afterwards? Or just read the headlines like sheep as always FAKE NEWS

punished for not conforming to blind obedience, pretty much

Arrested in front of all his classmates and sent to jail for exercising his rights

Gotta love Taliban America. Freedom rocks!

Are you serious?

Oh FFS Floridastan. You cannot make a kid recite the pledge

WTF?

well this should go well.

This is one of the most un-American things I’ve read since Trump’s last tweet. Since when are we taking away the 1st Amendment rights of children?

own twitter followers do not read the story only the headline and then get outraged. Nobody reads the WaPo not even it’s own sheep. 😂😂😂

For real?

Do we live in Korea all the sudden? When did this happen?

Good!!!

I look forward to Hannity covering this.... Who are we kidding, they won't

That kid is a hero

No First Amendment problems there.

fake news.

Florida is beyond crazy. How ridiculous.

Incredible!!!!

Over half the students in my homeroom remain seated during the pledge. As long as they are quiet, I say nothing. Forced patriotism is faux patriotism.

That sort of law enforcement filth is exactly what we are NOT supposed to pledge allegiance to in the UnitedStatesofAmerica.

Friendly reminder: students can say no to reciting the pledge. The supreme court ruled on it over 70 years ago. This is entirely the fault of the school.

Both teachers and parents need to teach children facts... Not some back field opinions.. Children are the future. Not mirrors for your narrative. I don't care what side of the fence you're on..

Uh... don't we have a concentration camp for that now?

Oh for heavens sake! Where’s our hero lawyer whose going to spit this back in their faces? Has tyranny spread to local government? Oh wait, it starts there.

stablegeniusinc Florida.....smh

Is this Mao’s era China?

It’s the first article of the constitution.

i never said the pledge in school either, because even back then I knew it was dumb as hell. it sucks

America, you lost it. Again.

NLuvWitUOnly

This is against the law. The Supreme Court ruled that saying the Pledge or not saying it come under the 1st Amendment. No one can be forced to say it and no one is required to say it. This kid needs an ACLU lawyer.

West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette

Lunacy.

This has already been settled....why do people in the government/who work for the government not understand how the Constitution (and case law) works....🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

america is filled with anti americans

Is this what the concept of welfare state for USA? Punishing a 6 grade chap.

Things like this are why I find America so interesting.

VISITFLORIDA you charging all the Jehovahswitnesses too?! They don’t say the pledge.

What kind of bizarro world have we become?

So, substitute teachers starts argument with 6th grader, escalates it and the kid get arrested for being disruptive? So much wrong with this picture. No charges and the arrest needs to be expunged.

we wonder who taught this 6th grader this disrespect?

Yeah, I think an apology and a settlement are likely soon.

Misleading headline. Kid threatened teacher, principal , cops and resisted arrest.

Is everyone nuts... they have the right to say no!!!

Wait? What?!

who knew one could be compelled to take the Pledge? isn't absence of compulsion or inducement intrinsic to taking a binding oath? in Florida? or the USA?

He has every right to refuse to say the pledge. You can’t force someone to say something they don’t want to say. This is punishing a child for exercising their rights.

and the student becomes the teacher

Stop the misleading headlines. This is why Trump calls you EnemyOfThePeople and FakeNews. HE WAS ARRESTED FOR FIGHTING AND MAKING THREATS

Did you verify? Check out the facts before reporting? Probably not. Teacher stated the student was disruptive.

ACLU are you on this?

Why would a sixth grader refuse to do such a thing? Because his/her parents brainwashed them.

Seriously? Florida!?

ACLU I hope you guys are helping this kid out. This is outrageous!

Saying the Pledge of Allegiance is an every day occurrence in school. If this kid is so rebellious that he can’t even do a simple Pledge of Allegiance then there’s more trouble coming. These are the warning signs when they rebel like this at such a young age and think it’s OK.

This is why I moved out of Florida

Great ! That’s the way to put things in place ! 11 yo boy was raised on hate n racism

Fake news again

About 20 years ago when I was 8, my neighbor and great friend didn't participate in the pledge of allegiance, because he was a Jehovahs witness, I didn't think twice about it. Not only were they on to something, but the fucking 'pledge of allegiance' is so shockingly fascist.

We have laws against child labor, but Florida tries to recoup the income from little kids by issuing shit citations to unemployed minors.

Student: The Pledge and the Flag are racist Sub: Why don't you leave then? Student: They brought me here. (at which point the class turns into a rap battle)

Why doesnt Florida just lock that kid up and throw away the key . What next maybe your trump has done worse and ya don't seem to care

That sounds like a dictatorship

3 words...totally fucking ridiculous.

ACLU!!!!

A 6th grader. This is so beyond what the situation warranted.

One can only hope an 11-year-old white kid does the same thing. And isn’t charged with shit. rightwinghypocrisy

The teacher should have acted like a mature adult instead of childishly trying to argue with a kid. She should have just said “Ok, if you feel that way just sit quietly during the Pledge.” That’s what my teachers in school did with kids who objected to saying the Pledge.

Ummmm, see amendment 1 of the U.S. Constitution.

A misdemeanor? This is ridiculous. ACLU sick em!

And Trump thinks he's going to be able to control this genie once it's out of the bottle.

Lawsuit.

Oh puleeeze

IWAPO: Misleading headline! The article clearly states he was arrested for disrupting the classroom and threats, not because he refused to say the pledge. It sounds like the teacher handled this poorly. There’s no law requiring recitation of the pledge.

This is a joke....right?

Racist substitute basically says you don’t belong here and go home!

Florida is a very sick state. I'll forego Disney World and give my money to a state that has the same values that the rest of America has (or whatever Ivanka dear eluded to in Europe) .

misdemeanors may include: petty theft, prostitution, public intoxication, simple assault, trespass, vandalism, reckless driving, discharging a firearm within city limits, possession of cannabis- not refusing to give the pledge of allegiance

The *checks notes* Land of the Free is forcing school children to be Nationalists

Can really see the school-to-prison pipeline at work here, can’t we? BlackLivesMatter

LiveLoveTeachM

West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette

Outrageous.

Why is it always Florida

Jehovahs witnesses dont pledge allegiance to the flag.... REMINDER: America has freedom of speech and freedom of religion. This is unamerican.... CONGRATULATIONS! You just gave this boy millions from the Dept. Of Education after the courts will obviously rule in his favor.

Florida and Wisconsin are now officially cancelled.

Liars!

Can’t wait for the law suit.

WTF!

Deceptful headline. Read the full article. He was arrested for his confrontation with the police, not because he didn't recite it.

Jesus h. Christ...

What the hell? I only graduated high school in 2012 and i never remember people being forced to say the pledge. My school always made it clear that you could abstain if you wanted.

That kid has more knowledge of the 1st Amendment than the POTUS!

ACLU , you awake?

Prosecuting children who exercise freedom of speech. Isn’t that what they do in Russia?

This has to be an Onion story. There has to be more to it.

He should learn that its not a good thing. Because otherwise he is believing in destroying himself, his home and his country. Only, a foreign enemy would want him to overthrow himself. potus
