Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Schitt’s Creek, the beloved sitcom starring Dan Levy, Eugene Levy, Annie Murphy, and Catherine O'Hara as the wildly out-of-touch riches-to-rags Rose family, is a bona fide Canadian success story. Originally aired on CBC, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Schitt’s Creek found exponential success in the United States when it found its way to Netflix.
Schitt’s Creek’s funniest episodes certainly demonstrate the winning humor that played a part in the show's success, but there’s more to the series that helped it reach top-tier status. Schitt’s Creek executive producer Andrew Barnsley reflected on the lessons he learned from the show while discussing another CBC-to-U.S. program, Son of a Critch, in a recent interview with Screen Rant.
Andrew Barnsley: Those were lessons that I think were learned from, from Schitt’s Creek and from other shows like that that work. A comedy doesn't need to be about the number of jokes in an episode; it really can be about the character and the heart, and where you find humor in, in real, grounded experiences. That's really how both of those shows found their footing and found their voice.
How Son of a Critch Follows in Schitt’s Creek’s Footsteps Barnsley’s other project, Son of a Critch, shares more with Schitt’s Creek than a punny name. To Barnsley’s point, Son of a Critch finds much of its humor from its characters, which has kept the show grounded to an emotional core that makes it just as relatable as it is funny. Just as in Schitt’s Creek, the characters in Son of a Critch may be exaggerated, but they are also very sympathetic.
Where Son of a Critch sets itself apart is in the fact that it is based on the real-life of Canadian comedian Mark Critch. Critch put out a memoir of the same name as the series in 2018, which provides the show with plenty of stories from which to pull. Still, the choice by Son of a Critch writers and creators to dive into playful sentimentally over a joke-per-minute count is likely thanks in part to the influence and success of Schitt’s Creek.
