Going back to school in the 1990s was a very different experience altogether

While there's still a few weeks left of the summer holidays, as we get closer to September thoughts inevitably turn to the new school term.

Zig-zag hair parting The zig-zag parting was a late '90s 'must have' for any girl wanting to replicate the style of Christina Aguilera, Mandy Moore, or Sarah Michelle Gellar starring as Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Fashion as we know is cyclical and the trend has resurfaced again in the past few years with many YouTube tutorial's now available on how to achieve this classic '90s look.

Novelty pencil case In the days when nearly everything was noted down in text books, the pencil case was a must for all those smelly gel pens. The bigger and wackier the better. National Record of Achievement This absolute white elephant was first handed out to secondary school pupils across the UK in the 1990s. An official looking portfolio intended to document a pupil's academic and non-academic achievements, it was a place to put your GCSE certificates, school reports and anything else to demonstrate your capability to a prospective employer.

Text book covered in wallpaper/wrapping paper It might sound strange to some but wrapping your exercise books in wallpaper and wrapping paper definitely made lessons more fun back in the day. While some kids would successfully stylise their boring maths textbooks with something colourful, others would walk in with books covered in chintz and woodchip wallpaper left over from decorating the back room.
