After a Department of Labor probe, the school district agreed to train supervisors and improved its leave policies, officials saidNo staff members have been disciplined following the findings, said Susan Jarrold, internal auditor for San Diego Unified, at Wednesday’s committee meeting. The manager who entered their own overtime is no longer at the district, she said.
Absence requests must be backed up with a paper form justifying the absence signed by both the employee and their supervisor. But districtsays timekeepers should promptly input absences into the time system when they learn of a request — even if they haven’t received the required form authorizing the absence.
What’s more, staff members are also supposed to record their absences in a separate system used to find and assign substitutes. But that substitute system is not linked with the district’s main timekeeping system, so the district relies on timekeepers to manually upload absences recorded in the substitute system into the timekeeping system.
