For the better part of the last month the Parma City Schools has been forced to clarify and explain a recently approved resolution allowing armed staff members.

At first district officials wouldn’t clarify which staff members -- including potentially teachers -- with proper training would be allowed to carry a gun inside of a school building.

Out of an executive session at last week’s meeting, the Board of Education clarified all along the intent regarding armed staff members was tied to the district’s security team, which includes a handful of members. The impetus for the recent resolution is tied to state lawmakers in Ohio last year giving local school boards of education the authority to decide whether to allow their teachers and school workers to carry guns.

“The chief wanted to be very clear they don’t hold a sign-off authority,” Smialek said. “That’s ultimately the Board of Education. We understand and respect where he’s coming from.
