Ulster University freshwater scientist, Dr Joerg Arnscheidt, says: 'Unfortunately I don’t think there is an easy fix for something we messed up over decades.'

We already know the blue-green bacteria is deadly to pets having poisoned several dogs - but it can also kill wild animals.

“It has to do with the nutrient enrichment of the lake.. it drains a lot of the area and I think two thirds is used by agriculture. “But optimistic estimates from other colleagues on a recovery of the situation will also be in a matter of decades. He said the best thing is to advise people not to let their pets drink from the water.

He also says fish can die as an indirect effect of the algae because of reduced oxygen in some areas, but since the lough is so big “there will always be fish surviving”. She added: “NIEA have said meetings to progress actions within the River Basin Management Plan to improve water quality will begin in September and will include measures targeted at reducing excess nutrients at source, such as the agriculture industry.Blue-green algal blooms, caused by cyanobacteria, are more likely when water is warm, slow moving and full of nutrients like nitrogen or phosphorous from fertilisers, sewage and run-off during rainfall.
