Mattagami First Nation, university launch inaugural STEAM-based program in partnership with Canadore College

TIMMINS — This summer, in collaboration with Canadore College, 20 Indigenous youth from the Mattagami First Nation participated in the inaugural land camp: Waawaaskonwe Niigaan offered by Algoma University.

Waawaaskonwe Niigaan translates to “there is a light ahead.” Algoma’s inaugural land camp is designed to support Indigenous elementary and high school students in their transition to post-secondary education, with a focus on increasing access for Indigenous women and learners in the STEAM fields, the university said in a news release.

Waawaskonwe Niigaan provides a learning experience that brings creativity and the arts together with culture and on-the-land activities in a welcoming and safe space for all participants, Algoma U added.
