This is just another version of the “good guy with a gun” National Rifle Association mantra that has never worked but gives the appearance of taking action. Maybe we ought to arm eighth graders and allow them to protect the younger kids. They would work cheap.Re: “More Guns in Schools Isn’t the Solution — Legislature’s shortsighted law requiring armed guards not likely to make students safer,” Monday editorial.

We already have armed security in banks and jewelry stores. I remember police guarding Beanie Babies in McDonald’s in the 1990s. We even have police getting paid to direct traffic at sports events and megachurches. Which of those is more important than students? I’m 100% behind those who are afraid to send their children to school because there are guns on the campus, supposedly in the hands of people who are there to protect their children. How easy it would be to have a gun fall into the wrong hands and the result be an absolutely heinous situation.

School librarians, as professionals, should be trusted to know what is and is not age appropriate when it comes to ordering books for their libraries, without having to burden publishers with a rating system likely to lead only to further disputation. What kind of rating should a book likeInstead, legislators should be investigating how our youths can be protected from the flood of pornography that pervades the internet and has no redeeming social value.
