The new Students Union Presidents at Northern Ireland's two universities are just settling into their new posts and beginning to unpack some of the issues facing students in the upcoming academic year..
Queen's SU president Beth, 23, who is from Derry and a Pharmaceutical Sciences graduate, takes on the role after serving as Education Officer for the previous 12 months and having been a school and course representative throughout her time at university. "We're pushing for lecture recording to be available for students, not just from an accessibility perspective but also because it's what many students have become used to.
"Last year was unreal in terms of engagement with more students being back on campus and the new SU building," Beth added. For Beth, the key objectives over the coming months include the ongoing fight against increased tuition fees, the rising cost of education and living alongside mental health. "We've just been funded again to run it again over the next academic year as last year we were hearing from students that they were struggling with rising rent prices and transport costs.
"Mental health and the cost of living crisis go hand in hand so we've just launched our new OMNI report after a campaign to raise awareness and gain insight into the mental health of students. Looking ahead to the new term, she said: "We've just had the results of this year's National Student Survey, which found that 75.1% of our students felt that we accurately represent them on academic matters.
