Researchers at the University of Waterloo have developed a new way to help determine what medications are safe for breastfeeding mothers.
The research indicated that many medical practitioners will err on the side of caution and advise nursing women not to use medications at all. This could have the effect of stopping important drug therapy for the mother or it could result in a decision to stop breastfeeding. The procedure developed by Yeung and her colleagues is a new metric that uses mathematical modeling to aid health-care providers in prescribing certain medications.
The PBPK modeling simulates a virtual person and represents how a drug moves in a body through mathematical functions. Through this modeling, researchers can understand how much of a certain drug is present in the breast milk and whether it will be transferred to the infant through breastfeeding, said a university news release.
