This week marks the beginning of my 11th year of teaching, and as far as I know, I’m teaching three language arts classes plus a homeroom crew as usual. I have classroom management practices in place. I’ll work doggedly on learning names, and I expect no yelling. But I’m always a little anxious as a new term begins, and I know that many students and parents feel the same.As a teacher, I work to do the same.
For progress to happen, students need support at both school and home. Each child is unique, so that support looks different from family to family. In general, though, I hope for families to recognize some basics:Parents are a child’s most important teacher. Consider how much time together is spent asking questions, talking and making eye contact, how often a child sees an adult learning by reading or listening.
