Ireland child benefit blow as Minister rules out extension to over 18s still in school

There are no plans to extend Child Benefit to students aged 18 and 19 who are still in full-time education, Social Welfare Minister Heather Humphreys has stated.

In a parliamentary question to Minister Humphreys, Labour Party TD Seán Sherlock asked Minister Humphreys how much it would cost to extend Child Benefit to 18 and 19-year-olds who are still in full-time education. However, the estimated full-year cost of extending Child Benefit to 18-year-olds still in secondary school at the current rate of payment would be €65m.

The Fine Gael Minister said: “There are currently no plans to extend Child Benefit in respect of full-time students who are over 18 years of age and in full-time education.
