Carlsbad’s Julieta Pareja has already won the same type of top prize awarded at the USTA Billie Jean King Girls 18s and 16s National Championships even before playing the tournament for the first time.
Pareja subsequently lost to the top-seeded player in her next match. Yet as part of enjoying the tourney atmosphere, she also saw a match with one of her favorite players, Rafael Nadel, from seats high atop Arthur Ashe Stadium. “It’s going to be nice to have a tournament close to home,” Pareja said, “not having to travel but instead staying at my house.”Pareja, an incoming freshman at Carlsbad High School, grew up play playing on community courts not far from home following the example of her older sisters now in college.
Pareja took a liking to the clay courts found on the elite circuit, and the surface suited her game well. The start of this year brought her second trip to Paris with Team USA for Les Petis As, known as the Grand Slam for Children. The winter timing meant playing indoors, apart from her norm.
