Being at Monarch was also the first time I had worked to build healthy relationships, which were not taught to me. For once, I had the support of my teachers, teaching assistants and volunteers who were all there to help empower and see the potential in me. We had group art, clubs and athletics. I was able to make friends for the first time without fear of judgment or having them learn about how hectic my personal life was.
Having a space where I felt safe and supported helped me focus on my academics and thrive in that area. I arrived at Monarch one year behind on my math courses and was able to catch up the summer before my sophomore year. Just having that confidence to complete what I couldn’t in a year in two months was amazing. It made me realize that it was not me who was not competent. It was the way the other school was structured.
Overall, I am so proud of the person I have become and am still becoming, thanks to my support system here at Monarch. I can confidently say that I would not be where I am in my academic and professional life if it had not been for the social, emotional and life skills I was taught.
