We're not lazy, we just need more sleep, say pupils

you talk a lot of crap go to bed early 😭

starting school at 10am would be inconvenient as fuck and honestly getting up at 9:30 every day instead of 8 like I usually do would make me feel gross & weird tbh

Poor little lambs. Mini-snowflakes, what a pampered generation we are breeding

Wonder how the students in India, China etc cope?

You could not make that one up. There is a simple answer. Work it out.

It does not matter what time school starts if you are on your PS4 or fiddling with phone on social network and as others have pointed out here if/when you ever get a job you will be fired if you consistently lie in

Nope, your lazy.

So this wonderous idea is based on the poor sleep patterns of a few pupils !---------- So WHY is there not a study on WHY they have poor sleep patterns instead of making changes that could affect the lives of millions with possible detrimental effects ?

The real world often starts earlier than school. This is not preparing people to go into work. Many jobs are now 24/7. I am often at work for 6.30am.

I sympathise as I’ve always found mornings difficult. I’m 60 now and it does get easier. I’m not lazy btw and find being self employed is the best option.

Wow! This is scary.. The next upcoming generation. Reliability and resilience doesn't come to mind. Get up! Get out! Get a life!

These poor hard done to sods are in for a shock when they get into the real world

Alot of self righteous comments here written by people unaware that teenagers do genuinely need more sleep than adults.

Good luck with that excuse when you’re working.

More sleep means less time on screens. Better quality sleep means less time on screens. Better mental health means less time in screens. Do the maths.

If they stay on their phones till 2am they would not be so tired would they, if any tired child says they are tired I say what time did you put your phone down they just grin and look guilty 😕😕😕😕

I’ve been hearing this about young people for a LONG time ..... DECADES long time.

Yea , right , 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Haha wait till you leave school and have to go to work and wake up at 5:00am everyday... good luck to the future of this world, full of soft snowflake Fanny’s nowadays got no backbone at all

How will these people cope when they have to get up at 04:40 to start work at 07:00? Try switching your phone off & going to bed earlier.

Oh dear.

🤣🤣🤣🤣teenagers have always been lazy fact 🤣🤣🤣

Nonsense !!! The school times have always been early starts, do not give in to these pampered boobys !

Yea this is called being an adult, we are all tired and need more sleep.

Next students will say they are still are not having enough sleep 11 am will be a better option.

Organise your lives and these young people want to vote

Absolutely

I blame netflix 😊

GO TO FKIN BED EARLIER THEN !

Exactly.

So go to sleep earlier then!

No just use the word 'Lazy', it fits perfectly.

Oh dear

Yes you are lazy!

Strange it is only a problem for student teenagers and not working teenagers. Turn the phone off and don't look at it after 9pm. If you nod off by 11pm you can have 9 hrs before getting up at 8 and being in class by 9. If you are not tired at bedtime try working a bit harder.

It’s disgusting, this generation seems to think the world owes them a living!!! Every other generation coped remarkable well getting up, going to school/college/university and to work. It’s about time we stopped bowing down to their wants and needs.

We really do live in a pathetic world.

Go to bed earlier?

Bullshit If the kids were not on their mobile phones 24/7 they would not be so tired. They expect everyone to 'Respect' us (the kids) they seem to think they can run before they can walk.

Neither of my teens have ever slept late, much as I wish they would once in a while. They're active and motivated kids who've always had a decent bedtime and routine and do not enjoy wasting their day choice parents responsible

Flippin hell you lot have more holidays than we ever had , now this

BBCWorld Yes but you can attend.

Then why are students in Asian countries who arrive at school at 6am and have extra schooling until 8pm out performing their western counterparts? FFS, stop making excuses for being lazy!

Go to bed earlier.

Get up fet to school end of

I hate getting up early always have and always will but this is life. Wake up and get on with it. How do you expect to prepare for the real world 🤪

So what happened to preparing them for the world of work?

That’s because you’re still up at 3am on instagram

Go to bed early You wake up early If you want to start work early

Yep sure, more time in the morning to engage with social media or play games consoles more like. What are we letting happen to the younger generation? They have no resilience in so many aspects of life & quite frankly it’s frightening.

Not lazy, just bone idle.

Get a grip, children are wrapped up in cotton wool. Generations and generations of children have managed to get up and do a full school day what makes this generation so different!

That’ll go down well with potential employers!! “Sorry I’m late I was asleep” .

Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahabahahahahahahahahahahahahahah ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahabahahahahahahahahahahahahahah ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahabahahahahahahahahahahahahahah ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahabahahahahahahahahahahahahahah! Wait it’s not April first yet...

Well........ Get more sleep then

Utter guff. Stop making excuses and get to bed at a reasonable time so you will feel properly rested for the next day. God knows what you poor sleep deprived little students will do when you go into the real world of work.

Cry me a river😢😢

Same difference !!!!

Could start later, get more sleep and finish an hour later. T would help keep the kids with no parents at home out of trouble at the same time!!!

UK kids too stupid to go to bed

Ahh, bless the the snowflake generation....

Our school day was from 9am to 4pm. Because of where it was, the other side of town it meant catching two buses each way. I was out of the house from 7.30am to 5pm each weekday from the age of 11.

Wow how did I survive school?

Something must have happened since I was born (79) as I'm sure I was a teenager and I got up early to go to school, had to get up early as I live in a rural village and had to take the bus to school. Do not remember being tired.....must have slept through the tiredness.

I sleep ten hours a night, from midnight until 10am. I spend three hours meditating and in the gym each morning, then work between 1pm and 7pm. How? I run my own business with clients around the planet - and don't waste one precious minute commuting. Commuting is the real enemy.

Try doing night shifts or 24 hour shifts and having to respond to emergencies you can't be half asleep then. Some of the generation today are unbelievable it's all about me me me, it's unfair, grow up and get in the real world

Lots of sleep science coming out at the mo. Yes teenagers become 'owls' _ needing sleep later in the evening and wake later in the morning. However, school hours don't fit this need, so it has to be tech off an hour before ten pm bedtime. Sleep is so important.

At school I did 9am - 4pm with 30 minutes travelling each way. At college I did 9am - 5pm with an hour travelling each way. I survived.

Then try putting the phones down and GOING TO BED EARLIER! You will have no choice when at college, Uni or WORK!

Heheh they wouldn't stand a chance here where schools start at 06.30, some schools even start at 06.15.

Yeah, right. Not.

Some Students are ridiculous. When I studied at University, I woke up at 6:00 travelled 1 hour on the bus to get to 9:00 lectures. It was always the students who lived on campus who turned up late!

Go to bed earlier and do not take your phone tv or tablet. Pretend you had to get up to do a milk round or at least a paper round before school. Certainly wakes you up for class esp in the winter

Great idea to start at 10, that way the roads will quiet at 8 when I drive to the golf club. But don’t forget that parents will also need to start work at around 10-30 to allow them to drive the kids to school.

I love how the Twitter comments on the news article is basically 'Pull em by the bootstrap'. It's a beautiful mixture of old man yell at clouds, back in my days and dementia all rolled into one.

Wimps n not prepared for the real world. Parent's fault they've been pampered n wrapped in cotton wool for years.

Why are 'grown ups' suggesting school kids are staying up late and 'getting bladdered'? They obviously were young so long ago they forgot what it was like. I remember having hell of a problem waking up when I was in school long before mobiles and social media.

Don't agree. It means, you are lazy, end of.

Jesus! God help those poor kids when they start work, perhaps they can convince work to let them start at 10....GET OFF YOUR PHONE AND GO TO BED EARLIER

Students and young people tend to sleep in late because they stay up late. Cause and effect.

Ive studied at University twice and on neither course did i ever have a lecture before 9am. Most jobs start at this time or before so all i can say is welcome to the real world! If you’re tired, go to bed earlier.

Couldn’t make it up 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Go to bed earlier?

Go to bed earlier. They do not appear to be very bright

Go to bed earlier Just throwing it out there right

Try going to bed earlier? We start work at nine. Don't think anyone would be impressed if you didn't pitch up til 10.

Easy way to solve the problem is for students to go to bed earlier

I wish I had this at school. Most of us worked part time and came home every day to home work. Some weeks I was doing about 60 hours work. So yeah, it would have been nice.

If you need more sleep go to bed earlier!!!

'Lying in doesn't mean we're lazy' Pretty close definition. My youngest just finished uni and always complained about being tired after going out till the early hours, spending hours on her bloody phone then complaining about the work load because she left it to last minute!!!

You are lazy

wow all these ignorant comments - you definitely feel understood in this society as a teen...

No you are lazy

It's time to end this addiction to everything starting so early, time to stop the bias to early risers. The science is in, it's bad for a large percentage of the population to continue with this madness.

Loool I knew the comments would be full of salty ass adults telling them “wait until the real world” and “spend less time on your phone” as if exams aren’t getting harder. Who hurt you all pls.

As if. If you think you can go into school later you’ll just go to bed later futile

Can’t believe she said that!!

Well if kids went to bed at a reasonable time. Then they wouldn’t be so tired the next morning.

Go to bed earlier.

What makes you different from every other generation before you. The difference is your a bunch of lazy arses who spend too much time on social media who've had it to easy for to long. Back in the real world

Get to bed earlier.

Well well you need more sleep? then go to bed earlier.

They could have a point. Scientific studies show a teens body clock is different. They grow out of it eventually.

You ever thought about how creating a forum for learning that’s less associated with things we dislike would help improve our performance and increase genuine enjoyment of learning?

If more sleep is needed as the title suggests - go to bed earlier If this is about circadian rhythms etc. then fair enough, school becomes 10-4:30 instead of 9-3:30? May make the transition harder when going to work though as most workplaces dont care what rhythm you’re in 😭

Bizarre. Teenagers need more sleep which they can get either by going to bed earlier or else getting up later. If they start at 10am most will just stay up an hour later and still be tired.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

cos they up to late social networking and watching tv in bedrooms no longer part of the family unit

Kick up the ass. Problem solved.

Aw!

I think this may well be scientific fact?

Get up at 2am to deliver to supermarkets so you can have more pillow time. lazybastards

God help you when you have to graft for a living

Pathetic!!!!!

😂😂😂

Snowflakes

More of a pointless culture shift, if people do the same amount of hours but later in the day who cares? Also endless boomers in the comments who don’t realise that they don’t have the exact same circadian rhythm as teenagers...

Bring back military service for these cream puffs.

Yes it does!

If you read the article, it's clear that there's no evidence-based research to support this yet, just personal opinions ...

Unbelievable, most students are away pissing it up til all hours racking up debt they'll never pay back and they want more sleep, what's happening to this country lol.

The real world is going to be a massive shock to them then

No your Lazy your be moaning about ten pass rates are so long their none existent

Wait till you start WORKING,IF YOU EVER DO,OR STAY IN SCHOOL ALL YOUR LIFE COMPLAINING

Kids these days

Yes it does you lazy gits

This is a waste of time. School is a lead to a job and what companies start at 10am! Simple solution: go to bed earlier.

Simple! Don’t stay up late, go to bed earlier. Just like anyone who starts work early in the morning.

Perhaps there is room for sleep studies an A* in not getting up could see you on the way to university

I would have thought the answer for that would be to go to bed earlier...😊

I’ve heard it all now!! Bless are you tired!!! It’s called the real world! Not the one like some live in wrapped in cotton wool getting offended if someone even looks in their direction!! If you’re tired put ya phone down and go to bed earlier, simple really!!

The only people that deserve a long sleep in are the hard-working pensioners that spent fifty years getting up early some with 2 jobs, teenagers do not need more sleep they need education, education on how to manage there life sleep balance

Anyone who has kids of that age is laughing right now!

It’s been proven that teens DO need more sleep owing to the significant amount of change/growth they undergo. Not to say that less screen time and earlier nights wouldn’t help...

😑

Here’s a little tip: Go to bed earlier

Jeez its frightening the saps society's now producing. Frightened of their own shadows & offended at the slightest thing.

BBCWorld then go to bed earlier and stay off of your social media! Bad parenting again!

Ignorant comments from boomers abound. There's increasing evidence to say that the circadian rhythym of teens are different to adults. A teenager's body tells them to go to sleep around 11pm, sometimes even later. Waking up for school at 7am becomes detrimental to their health.

What time do you go to your bed at night

I left school at 16 had to be on the coach at 7am to start work at 8. Society is creating an issue where there wasn't one.

American- 'sleeping in' British- 'lying in' Both equally awesome.

What a load of rubbish, I won't say more because it's already been said by others. Can't wait for them to meet the real world though.

Funny, students for decades have had the same start times and have managed fine. Put the consoles and phones away sand get a early night sleep

Stay off your dam phones

Maybe go to bed earlier instead of staying up late playing video games or on social media? No excuses.

Put your cell phone in another room at night and put it on ‘silent’. That will fix your problem!

How these people pass exams god only knows because their maths is appalling they can't even count go to sleep earlier and you won't be tired in other get off your mobiles and internet and go to sleep

Simple: start school day at 8; by 9 students will have woken up.

We all need more sleep, but do us workers get it? No! What excuse is that to an employer? Perhaps come off social media earlier and sleep?

Well put your phones and tablets down, don’t get bladdered on week nights.

Go to bed earlier

Get up and do some bloody work !!!!!

how are you endorsing this kind of 'news' providing material for snowflakes! Earlier to bed, earlier wake up! Show the stat of recommended hours of sleep and let them do the maths!

Yes you are

She looks lìke she's been on it straight through

Don’t care if it’s better for them 🤷🏻‍♂️ parents need to get to work not wait around all morning for the kids to get up. Saft

You poor darlings of course you should have more sleep you have so many pressures you must be exhausted

Old farts triggered

Get off your phones and go to sleep you lazy good for nothings. Entitled generation snowflakes!!!

Perhaps we should rename them 'Snoreflakes' poor little lambs..

What a load of cobblers.

Go to fucking bed earlier then?

Lower the voting age they said 🤣🤣🤣

Hungover maybe?

When and if they start a job that starts at 7.30 how will they coup

Unsurprising snobbery towards the younger generation on this thread. People want their children to be better off than them, except when then that means actual institutional change, especially hypocritical from those that grew up in the 60s and 70s

Go to bed earlier. End of debate.

They always busy on their mobile phone... go to bed early wake up early...

No just lazy and needy

Don't we all lol.

Woteva Trevor!

Just give them Fridays off. I have too young kids and teachers see them more than I do. I Don't by the tired issue, just go to bed earlier. But Deffo a debate for less time at school.

LOL. If i went to school or work still needing sleep it was my own fault. I just dealt with it. crikey.

You need more sleep? 😄😄 I'd love to be there when the world bites you on the ass 😄

I am 100% behind this. As a growing teen I could EASILY sleep 12 to 14 hours. I remember being called Lazy & thinking I'd never do this to my teens. The body is going through extreme stress at this point in life.

then stop playing on computera and phones all night,

What do they say if you ask them charge their cellphones outside their bedrooms at night? Or to not be looking at screens after 10pm,11pm? midnight?

Have to agree with this. as a man who sleeps to 4pm most days. i am still very productive. yesterday i went to morrisons, the boozer and had a good knock with the tv lisence man. wont be coming back to my gaff again haha.

Ahhh me too! Hey boss, can I come in to work later as i'm tired? In my experience (of having 2 teenagers) they need to put the tech aside at bedtime and actually go to sleep.

How could this possibly be any simpler. Stop looking at your phones all night and go to sleep!!!!!!!

Go to bed earlier then....

Ready it is not the children that are bringing this up that we should be laughing at is the so called ADULTS that support this in anyway rather than PARENTING and saying come here and give them a cuddle and a promise we will spin the world in the direction they would like it to.

So when they finally get to the real world of work will they all want to do a late shift!? snowfakes

Hate to state the obvious, try going to bed earlier.

Tosh. Millennial snowflakes! For how many millennia have humans existed, and those under 16 wanted to sleep? Correct me if I am wrong, but it wasn’t until 1880 (a mere 139 years ago) that education was made compulsory to age 10; only raised to age 11 in 1893 and to age 14 in 1918!

Then just go to bed earlier.. it’s not rocket science!

In an ideal world you could go to bed earlier, stay off phones etc. for 2hours before sleeping, build in relaxation techniques inc mfness and med. And yes a later school day start would support the teenage brain as it undergoes pruning and hormonal changes etc.

I was a uni student for seven years and I had no problem getting up for lectures & seminars at 9am. Even when I had a day off I still got up early and went in to study!!! Sleeping in is wasting your time & money! Use the resources at all times because before you know it.. gone.

Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, now follow the simple rules, 1, turn phone, computer, tablet OFF! 2, Go to bed when your tired and earlier. It's in your hands accept responsibility it's in your hands.

Is this generation of students just dressed up chocolate teapots? No resilience to any sort of challenge or problem apart from moan/cry

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂poor souls!!!

So what happens when they start working and need to be up early for work. Will they tell their employee sorry I can’t start at 8 I need more sleep, so I’ll start at 9 instead.

How did people of my generation and generations before that manage it? Absolutely ridiculous, go to bed earlier, switch off the phones. If they think it's bad now, wait until they start work.

Go to bed early and don’t take ur phone!!

Absolute piffle....

We’re not lazy err yes you are god help us when you get in the real world

We all need sleep but I have to be in work at 7.30 , any excuse for the students at any level

Put your phones down and go too sleep like we used to do!

Not lazy correct...idel rude selfish ect ect ect..

100% lazy.

Ok to everyone saying students are lazy ‘oh they won’t be able to do a 9-5 job then’ you’re forgetting 2 things, homework and revision, in year 11 I didn’t go to sleep until 2am most nights because I was studying no wonder I woke up tired at 6am

Go to bed earlier then. Idiots.

Oh yes it does. Who are you kidding?

I agree... i am fully awake after 10 am and i study better around midnight

LOL millennials... 🙄

Says a generation brought up by a culturally and financially privileged generation who don't like to admit that their parenting has largely failed the current generation

Great! Let's make students even less prepared for full time employment than they are already!

We all need sleep, after doing a 12hr night shift all week

Ye, that’s called lazy

School & college is prep for the real World, get use to it. Turn off your phones & consoles, and go to bed. Learn self-discipline & get a routine.

Boy, are they in for a shock when they reach the big bad world of work. In answer to their question, yes they are lazy. If lack of sleep is an issue, here’s a thought, go to sleep earlier

good sleep has been a sign of good health and productivity

Go to bed earlier hun, it's as easy as that.

Go to bed earlier.

It's very common for young people to be up after 12am. Yes they need more sleep.

What absolute nonesense . In my sixth form days, up at 7 , morning run breakfast school, exercise helped brain, food sustained during the day, for us it was normal to be at school by 9, What is wrong with these kids. D the system, or is it teachers looking for a soft option

Snowflakes

SleepTalk 'Unless later starts are combined with sleep education, it may actually worsen the issue,' - Prof Russell Foster.

Perhaps the youngsters need to go to bed earlier instead of playing on their tablets/phones

Go to bed earlier and get off your smart phones, was never a issue in my generation

I despair, do teenagers think that work will start earlier because they're a ' bit tired'. Put down the phone/tablet/X Box, do the study & revision before the 11th hour & get an early night. grownupsmanage

Yea let's get them used to the idea that life after school is easy and they won't have to get up to go to work early either, is it any wonder why so many jobs fail to attract applicants such as those that involve shifts or getting dirty

I raised four and I agree. Three of mine had no such issues, but one suffered. There just wasn't enough hours in a school day for her. I saw the problem, but I had no opportunity to help. Things went better in college where she could set her own hours.

Nope, you're lazy. High school starts at 7:15 am in the U.S. I grew up in the U.K. and used to roll out of bed at 8:30 and dash to school for 8:50 after staying up past midnight the night before.

Get in the real world. Grow up.

I can almost hear the aggrieved plaint of previous generations practically reciting the old Four Yorkshiremen sketch.

Y A W N

Might do better to put away mobile, Facebook, Twitter and xbox's to name but a few then ask the Chinese for one what hours they study - as home standards drop in general so does parental control/respect and so on

Go to bed early

When most people left school at fifteen and started work nobody ever said anything as stupid.....

How come other people for generations seem to have managed it then? What’s so different about this generation Oh yeah , spoiled and entitled comes to mind! What happens when these new doctors and nurses are needed in an emergency are they going to be too bloody tired!!

Turn off your devices b4 going to bed instead of laying awake on social media till early hours

Well, stop on social media 'til 3 in the morning...

Yes it does make you lazy!

9 o'clock isn't early!

The truth is they've no idea why they're suffering: Insomnia, and/or sleep disturbance, and/or low quality, unrefreshing sleep 😑 Why? Because the establishment (including BBC) has been content to CoverUp key environmental/behavioural factors for decades 🤫 TruthWillOut

Your lazy snowflakes!!

Enjoy it while you can. I can’t remember the last time I was able to sleep past 6.30 and I look back on my “sleep-ins” with nostalgia.

Come off it!

I’ll try this line with my boss.

Possibly true, how about going to bed earlier? Say always in bed by 8pm then you can lay in bed for 12 hours and still get to tutorials eh?!

It either means they are lazy or they have been up half the night drinking and shagging - a high percentage at least. 9am is a completely reasonable time to start education - sets you up for the real world far more than 10am will.

Go to bloody bed earlier then you muppets. Just wait until you have to get a job and it's a 5am alarm clock. school start times have been acceptable for decades, it's the new breed of snowflake that can't cope.

says you.

Go to bed earlier FFS if you cant get to grips with that.....

These kids are melts. They don’t know the meaning of the word tired.

This is why the education system is failing in this country. Compare this to somewhere like China. These students are idiots

I totally agree with this, I think and agree on a later start time for our children.

I’m 15 and I reckon 10 is wayyyy too late, let’s just do 9 that’s when most people’s work starts, getting us ready to get up at the right time for work as well

What ? I used to get 4-5 hours of sleep on weekdays and did fine at school. Need more internet time before school more like.

Oh FFS! Perhaps if they went to bed at a suitable time they'd be able to get up in the morning? Wait 'till they have to get a job!

Because that's what they'll experience in the big wide working world? Fucking melts strap on a pair and grow the fuck up. I swear these headlines are written to annoy folk like me.

FFS cant believe im reading this shit !!!💤

If these students went to bed earlier they would get more sleep. How will they cope with 9am lectures at university or even having to get up for a job?

Snowflakes.

Oh for gods sake!! Try getting to bed earlier if you're not getting enough kip - it'll be interesting to see how you cope when you come out the other end and start working for a living

God help these people when they enter the real world!!

Bless.... 😂😂

No, you are lazy. Make lifestyle changes - go to bed earlier, eat healthier, don’t stare at a screen so much - and you’ll sleep better and won’t wake up exhausted 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m in my 20’s and am at the gym for 6am every morning and in work for 8am. It’s my choice and it’s not hard

Starting at 9am...first world problems.

I am begging to lose the will to live. Simple solution go to bed earlier!

Just a thought, have they tried going to bed earlier ?

Go to bed earlier. Turn your phone off. Simple.

Agree -- students should not have to go to school before 8:30-9:00 am. Growing children need their sleep and would be more productive if they could get enough of it.

Going to bed an hour earlier would fix that....

Get Panodrama to do a documentary 🤭😂😂😂
