Conners came over a week early to acclimate to the time zone, the weather, and to play in the Scottish Open where he and Taylor both finished tied for 19th. Aside from the heat of competition, Conners’ only other links experience came from watching on television growing up.

Plus, the slower greens at The Open theoretically should help with a weak point in his game.Article content “I’ve learned that you really need to compress some irons shots,” he said. “If you’re a little bit shallow, it’s hard to make good contact because the club doesn’t really get deflected underneath the ball. So I’m not really thinking about being super steep or anything, but I’m aware that you can beat down into the ground on some iron shots to get better strikes. Obviously my iron play is a strength, so I need to bring that to links golf.
