I went on the new-look University Challenge - the questions are so hard I could have cried

I'm sat watching the live recording of the all-new University Challenge in Salford - and I can't quite believe what I'm hearing. Question after question is rattled off by new BBC quiz host Amol Rajan and I haven't fathomed an answer to a single one in the past half an hour.

Or challenge those famous buzzers very much at all. Poor host Amol has to try and over-simplify every question for us to even consider having a stab at it. The only salvation comes with the music round, which to my delight, is music of girlbands of the past - this is surely my moment to shine. Except I wrongly went for The Shirelles instead of The Ronettes so that all went pear-shaped as well.

Viewers should expect a slightly more relaxed approach from Rajan than Paxman's often rather stern approach when he was in charge. Although during our time watching the filming we loved hearing plenty of the old favourite notes of exasperation that viewers will be familiar with. The city's student mega-brains have won the contest four times before - that makes it the most successful university jointly with Magdalen College, Oxford and Imperial College, London.

Amol laughs: "Most people think he's built into the buzzer system, but he's real, it's the real Roger Tilling here. I was more starstruck meeting him than anyone else I think".
