Rutgers New Jersey Medical School on the campus of University Hospital in Newark.Over the objections of a dozen medical staff and community representatives, the Rutgers Board of Governors on Monday unanimously approved combining New Jersey Medical School in Newark and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick to become the Rutgers School of Medicine.
While the plan is to operate two equal campuses with separate finances, critics fear that New Brunswick facilities will receive more funding and renovations. They say that for Newark, the state’s largest and poorest city, University Hospital is crucial to residents’ health, as it is the primary site for clinical training of New Jersey Medical School students.
“It’s hugely disappointing that they would not have just allowed for a pause for many of us to get more information,” Ruiz told NJ Advance Media Monday. “To do this at the height of when people are away, and students are not on campus speaks volumes in and of itself.” Dr. Jeffrey Levine, a 27-year faculty member at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and a member of the University Senate, was among the dozen critics of the plan and called out Strom’s decision to submit his merger proposal while the University Senate was not in session.
Ingrid Hill, vice chair of internal affairs for the People’s Organization for Progress, a community group, told the board that the merger would weaken University Hospital, which she called the only public hospital in the state providing care without regard to a person’s ability to pay. After the vote, Diomedes Tsitouras, the union’s executive director, said, “It is a sad day when the university moves a resolution solely championed by one administrator to effectively end 50 years of history. This merger is opposed by faculty, students, and community. We will explore legal, legislative, and other options to stop this disgraceful unilateral action.”
