Known for pushing gun restrictions after the Uvalde school shooting in his district, Gutierrez will vie for the opportunity to take on Republican Cruz in the general election. U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, D-Dallas, is already running in the primary.

This week’s Texas: The Issue Is focuses on the push to raise the age to buy an assault-style rifle in Texas.

The video also singles out Cruz for his 2021 trip to Cancun during the power-grid collapse in Texas, calling it "just indefensible." And it also takes shots, briefly, at other state GOP leaders, including Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton. "I’m a proud gun owner and believer in the Second Amendment, but after 19 children and two teachers died, the Republicans would’t even allow us an opportunity to even talk about ways to protect our kids," Gutierrez said in the video. "It’s why we have to do something now."

More recently, Gutierrez successfully amended the Senate’s latest property-tax plan to include pay bonuses for public school teachers. It is unclear if the House will go along with the plan in the current special session.U.S. Rep. Colin Allred raises $6.2 million in first 2 months of Senate race
