South Australia's two biggest universities have signed a historic agreement that will see them become one by 2026.But there's still a major hurdle to clear to make the University of Adelaide and University of South Australia merger a reality, after a decade of negotiations.South Australia's two biggest universities have signed an historic agreement that will see them become one by 2026.
The universities believe by joining forces they'll create more jobs, receive more research opportunities and garner more attention from international students. said the institutions didn't believe they "had the he size to compete with what is happening in growing economies" individually. But before the new university is established, the agreement will need to be approved by state Parliament's upper house - and it appears that's unlikely to happen without a high level of scrutiny.
"This is the biggest shake-up of our university in South Australia in generations," Greens Senator Robert Simms said.
