Pelosi released a statement on Friday, hours after the high court canceled Biden's plan to cancel $400 billion in student loans for more than 40 million students.“Wrongly, the Majority Opinion, in this case, ignores the convincing arguments on the President’s legal authority that were made in the last year by the Department of Education and by former House Education Committee Chairman George Miller," Pelosi said.
The former speaker appeared to contradict herself after comments she gave during a press conference in July 2021 had been circulating all day.In the majority opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts quoted Pelosi explaining the limits of Biden's power as president. "As then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi explained: 'People think that the President of the United States has the power for debt forgiveness. He does not," Roberts wrote."'He can postpone. He can delay. But he does not have that power. That has to be an act of Congress.'"Biden had claimed he had the authority to wipe out student loans through the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act of 2003, or the HEROES Act.
Six Republican-led states sued the Biden administration, alleging that the president had exceeded his legal authority when he launched the program last August.
