Prosecutors charged the school resource officer with negligence in the 2018 Parkland school shooting—but he was acquitted by a Florida jury Thursday.

A Florida jury found Scot Peterson—a former school resource officer at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida—not guilty of negligence and other criminal counts, after prosecutors said he failed to confront a 19-year-old shooter who killed 17 students and teachers in one of the biggest school shootings in the U.S.... [+]Key Facts

Peterson had pleaded not guilty to 11 counts, including negligence, felony child neglect and perjury, and faced aof nearly 100 years in prison for allegedly failing to apprehend the 19-year-old gunman in February 2018. According to prosecutors, Peterson arrived at the school building where the shooting occurred less than three minutes after the first shots were fired, but remained in a stairwell for the remainder of the shooting, and then for another 40 minutes after it ended.Peterson, who worked as the school’s armed resource officer at the time of the shooting, “chose to run” when he reached the school, and that every student who had been killed was still alive by the time he showed up.

Peterson’s defense argued he did not know at the time how many active shooters were at the school or where the shots were fired, and instead initiated a “code red.”
