An out and proud gay man, HACC president 'Ski' (as he is widely known ) is creating an inclusive environment for learning and education.

Sean Simmers | ssimmers@pennlive.comTo honor the work of area advocates for unity, tolerance and equal rights in the Harrisburg region, PennLive is shining a light on members of the LGBTQ+ community who are helping advance the movement for full equality.John J. “Ski” Sygielski was named the seventh president and CEO of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, in 2011.

Ski, as he is widely known, was previously president of Laurel Ridge Community College and Mt. Hood Community College . Ski is a current member and past chairman of the American Association of Community Colleges Board of Directors and served on its 21st Century Commission on the Future of Community Colleges. He served a two-year term in 2019-21 as chair of the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges Board of Directors.

He is the only member of his working-class family to graduate from college, earning a bachelor’s, two master’s degrees and a doctorate, including an honorary associate degree from a community college. A biking enthusiast, Ski and his husband live in Harrisburg with their Basenji dog, Bart.
